History

The Dai-Ichi Shotokan Karate Do School began in 1989 at John Marshall High School in Richmond, VA. It was orginally designed to be a free eight (8) week self-defense class for city employees and their families. The class was being taught by a city police officer. Shihan Marcos Delrio became a volunteer instructor for this class and so inspired his students that they asked him to stay on beyond the eight week course. There were many other instructors who visited the school and assisted with the class, however it was through the leadership and dedication of Shihan Marcus Delrio that the school has grown and reached its present status as one of the largest and one of the best schools in the city and state. Shihan Marcos Del Rio moved to Washington in 2006. Shihan Richard Watkins is now the main instructor. Shihan Dunhree Davis is his assistant. Renshi Sandra Sills-Wyche, Renshi Ed Davis, Renshi Marisa Mayo, & Sempai Gerald Fenner are also instructors. We strive to make our school the best and strongest on the east coast.
